New Wayne Krantz album...

I recently picked up the new Wayne Krantz album entitled "Your Basic Live". It features, besides Wayne on guitar, Tim Lefebre on bass, and the ever amazing Keith Carlock on drums...

How Carlock has escaped the lime-light of the drumming world is beyond me.. his playing on this album is simply, lacking a better word, revelatory... It's pure joy to listen to him going off over Krantz' particular brand of fusion...

And at $18 including shipping, it's a real steal for a double album...

this album definitely makes the top 5 of my list this year...

Keith's on the cover of MD next month. He's certainly got one of the most unique styles I've ever heard which in and of itself is a pretty amazing accomplishment.

I much prefer Greenwich Mean to this most recent live album. This last one has a little too much musical "pecking" for me but I'm a HUGE Wayne fan.

Keith is on the entire upcoming Steely Dan CD and I know there's a site up somewhere right now with a bunch of .mp3s of Keith and SD playing a Jazz radio show live. I'll see if I can find the link. I don't remember the stuff being that impressive but maybe some of you SD fans would want to check it out.

Thanks for the info... I had no idea that Keith was going to be on the new SD album, much less that they were actually recording one... goes to show what kind of rock I've been living under.. :-)

As far as YBL goes, I definitely agree that it's more "jammy" than other WK releases, but I kind of like that, it's almost like Coltrane on funk in a way...

And even though Zach did a really good job on
"2 Drink Minimum", I feel that Keith is the drummer has made the most out of WK's music...

It's awesome that he's getting to be on the MD cover though, hopefully more people will get hip to Mr Carlock's extraordinary and original drumming...

I've been hearing some nice things about 'Greenwich Mean'. I may pick that one up.
I've got a disc by a guy called Michael Harris in which Carlock shares the drum chair with a couple of other guys. He does some nice stuff on it even though the massive guitar sound keeps him kinda low in the mix.

Greenwich Mean was recorded live, the Pro Tools'd together after the fact.

Some of the cuts are pretty wild; A sections cut from one and stuck to another tune entirely to make a B section, then back again. You can hear some of the edits but it makes it cooler to me somehow.

Track 7 I think (the one where you can hear Wayne talking to someone in the crowd at the beginning) is INSANE. Left hand moeller'esque accents are incredible.

Don Randi (owner of the famous Baked Potato) was raving about Keith last year after seeing the gig I attended. I really hope Keith blows up. He's SUCH a unique player and when I spoke with him at NAMM a few years ago was such a nice guy.
